The Arts Intel Report

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Opening September 30

The opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, delayed several years because of development problems, construction issues, and then the pandemic, is finally scheduled for this fall. The museum will feature “Stories of Cinema” exhibitions in the Spielberg Family and Rolex Galleries; a retrospective that celebrates Hayao Miyazaki, the eminent Japanese animator and director, now 80 years old; and several film screenings a week. And then there’s the museum’s collection of film ephemera—treasures such as the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in The Wizard of Oz, an extraterrestrial headpiece from Alien, and a stop-motion device used in Jurassic Park. —J.D.
