Abigail DeVille: Light of Freedom

Oct 27, 2020 – Jan 31, 2021
11 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10010, United States

“The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims, have been born of earnest struggle,” said the abolitionist, author, and statesman Frederick Douglass in 1857. “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” It was these words that inspired Abigail DeVille’s 2020 sculpture Light of Freedom, commissioned by Madison Square Park. A gold scaffolding holds a monumental torch, its blue flame constructed with the broken-up arms of mannequins. The torch historically symbolizes liberty, and its positioning in this public park speaks of enlightenment during turbulent times. —E.C.
