Artist Abel Rodriguez is known by many names. Growing up in the Colombian Amazon, he was known as Mogaje Guihu. His expertise in native flora won him the nickname “el nombrador de plantas” (the namer of plants). It was his uncle, a sabedor (man of knowledge), who taught Rodriguez the perfectly-executed botanical illustrations that characterize his practice. He began to make a living from his drawings in Bogota, before establishing himself around the world. These are images of a powerful, colorful Eden bursting with pure life. —E.C.
