A Strange Loop

Apr 11 – Sept 4, 2022
149 West 45th Street, New York, NY 10036, United States

Usher, an usher for The Lion King on Broadway, is displeased with his life. An aspiring playwright, he begrudgingly accepts a job ghostwriting a Tyler Perry play. As a queer Black fat man he finds daily life in America frustrating. Written by Michael R. Jackson—a queer Black fat playwright—the musical sees Usher writing a play about a struggling playwright who writes a play about a struggling playwright, and so on. A Strange Loop debuted Off Broadway in 2019 and earned Jackson the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2020. Now, the play comes to Broadway. Jaquel Spivey stars as Usher, while the original cast members reprise their roles as the chorus inside his head. —Jensen Davis
