When the MacArthur Foundation bestowed a “genius” grant on Kyle Abraham in 2013, it seemed a bit premature. A year later—after two richly contextual, extraordinarily textured evening-length premieres that delivered on their vast ambitions—the award seemed entirely earned. The Lincoln Center “homecoming” season for Abraham’s chamber ensemble revives a chunk of that early triumph. The Gettin’ integrates conceptual artist Glenn Ligon’s evocative set, Grammy-winning jazz composer Robert Glasper’s riff on Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, and vital, mercurial dances into a singular whole. The Rose Theater gig also reprises the aptly titled If We Were a Love Song, to Nina Simone in lyrical mode. Abraham has a special way with romantic duets, and this 2021 piece offers them in abundance. Finally, there’s the choreographer’s latest, a gluey group entanglement—a hopeful vision of interdependency—to Shelley Washington’s score for two baritone saxophones. As befits this capacious jazz venue and Abraham’s devotion and attunement to Black American music, consummate musicians will be delivering the songs and scores live. —Apollinaire Scherr
