A Bright Room Called Day was first presented in 1985, when Ronald Reagan was president. Structured in the collage style that Tony Kushner would bring to dramatic coherence in Angels of America, it parallels the plight of progressive German artists in the face of Fascism with the AIDS crisis in America. The simile was a stretch for some, but this is a new version of the play, revised to address current American politics—and parallels that were once unthinkable. —L.J.
