1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything

It may be a stretch to say that any year was the year in which music changed everything, but this movie—from the filmmakers behind Amy, the Academy Award–winning Amy Winehouse documentary—makes a good case for 1971. It was the time of Muhammad Ali, the Vietnam War, Nixon, the Black Panthers, Andy Warhol, and James Baldwin, and into this clash of cultures jumped, head first, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Elton John, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, the Rolling Stones, The Who, and many others. This eight-part docuseries layers interviews with radio broadcasts and archival performance footage for a complete picture of the year that saw music reflecting the times while also moving the needle. —J.V.
