Jacksonville native Whitney Oldenburg is driven to investigate the relationship between humanity and its objects. Her work, she says, navigates “a culture that assigns value to objects at the expense of human life. I believe the objects we surround ourselves with are inadequate defense measures against a hostile environment that reduces social relations to relations between things.” Oldenburg examines this subject through sculpture, often repurposing leftover consumer goods as a way to push viewers to consider their attachment to lifeless materials. In an exhibition that features her most recent sculptures and drawings, Oldenburg asks viewers to rethink the values of our current society. —Maggie Turner
