Ute Lemper has been channeling Marlene Dietrich for decades, notably in a major Berlin revival of The Blue Angel. Mind you, the leggy German siren of the present day has plenty of other feathers in her cap: Grizabella in Vienna, Peter Pan in Berlin, and Sally Bowles in Paris—all within five years of her professional debut in musical theater. Still, the liaison with Marlene has been a constant. Once, the two divas even connected live, by telephone. Here, never stooping to the tricks of the impersonator, Lemper tells Dietrich’s story and sings her songs, from Friedrich Hollaender to Cole Porter, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan. —M.G.
