For over 30 years, the red brick garage at 33 Wooster Street, in SoHo, has been a crucible of avant-garde, experimental, unpredictable, and extreme theater. Directed by founding member Elizabeth LeCompte, whose been at the helm since the late 70s, the company is known for splicing audio, video, and slide projections into its productions. Props have a long half-life, reappearing from one play to another, almost like members of the group. A new exhibition at Carriage Trade shines a light on these inanimate Wooster Group “actors,” making the case for props as art. —L.J.
