The Roots have never been bound by the genres or creative lines that have limited other musicians throughout time. They weave seamlessly between soundscapes to create a “melting pot-esque” catalogue comprised of 14 albums dating from 1995 to 2021. Jazz, R&B, rock, funk, and, of course, hip-hop are all incorporated into their musical style. Tariq Trotter, more commonly known as Black Thought, is the lead M.C. for the group. Ahmir Thompson, better known as Questlove, leads the rhythm section at the drum kit. Kamal Gray and “Captain” Kirk Douglas are the other two oldest lasting members on keys and guitar respectively. Rolling Stone magazine has called them the “world’s best hip-hop band” which is an opinion shared by many, most notably Jimmy Fallon, who has had them as his house band for The Late Night Show and The Tonight Show for a combined total of over 15 years.
