Literacy is declining, classic books are being banned from schools, and men have stopped reading fiction. But not all hope is lost! The Rest Is History host Dominic Sandbrook and his producer Tabitha Syrett have an antidote to readers’ malaise: The Book Club, a new podcast dedicated to both classic masterpieces and modern best-sellers. The podcast promises to take listeners “from Middlemarch and Middle-earth to Wuthering Heights and Westeros.” The first episode does indeed focus on Emily Brontë’s opus, along with a timely conversation on the merits and shortcomings of Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation. Upcoming episodes will cover John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, and Sally Rooney’s Normal People. —Paulina Prosnitz
