As hotels and travel agencies capitalize on World Cup fever with all-inclusive event and accommodation packages—some costing a million dollars—it’s easy to feel that the Beautiful Game has reached a commercial point of no return. In homage to the sport’s enduring camaraderie and poetic athleticism, Metrograph has curated a selection of films that includes the raucous queer comedy Onda Nova, which follows a Brazilian women’s soccer team as they navigate conservative forces, and Offside, a story about Iranian girls who want to watch a World Cup match but can’t because of their gender. These stories illustrate that one doesn’t need a luxury club box to proclaim a love for soccer—just a ball, a goal, and a few friends. —Maggie Turner
