Text, Paratext, and Images

Sept 1, 2020 – Feb 28, 2021
20 N Main St, Providence, 02903, United States

Paratext—Latin for “beside text”—refers to the inscriptions, reference notes, and captions that inhabit the spaces between text and image in a book or manuscript. Paratext can also be an image in itself, as in the case of graceful calligraphy or an eye-catching typeface, and it has been distinctly important to postmodernists. In this exhibition, RISD features Qur’an manuscripts, classic Japanese prints, and contemporary works. Curated by Kuan-Hung Liu and Kimia Rahnavardi. —E.C.
