Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality | Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape

May 24 – Oct 13, 2019
180 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne VIC 3006, Australia

Shortly after the 13-year-old Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang took the throne in 246 B.C., he ordered the construction of terracotta warriors who would defend him in the afterlife. It wasn’t a small SWAT team. His army, discovered less than 50 years ago, numbered in the thousands. This exhibition features a contingent of the immortal army alongside new work by the contemporary Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, one of which is a site-specific installation of 10,000 hanging porcelain birds. —J.V.
