The Inuit artist Shuvinai Ashoona grew up in the 1970s in Nunavut, in the Arctic North of Canada, amid a family of celebrated artists. Her mother, Sorosilooto, was a graphic designer; her father, Kiugak, was a sculptor. Ashoona forged her own path, drawing intimate depictions of the community in graphite. In the early 2000s, she began creating works in color. Ashoona’s compositions, which often feature scarcely populated terrains, are packed and detailed, full of movement both seen and felt. In 2022, she was awarded a Special Mention by the jury at the Venice Biennale. This is her first show in Europe since Venice. —Elena Clavarino
