Dianne Wiest keeps us guessing in John J. Caswell, Jr.’s new Scene Partners, which marks her return to the New York stage after six years. Wiest plays the newly widowed Meryl Kowalski, a.k.a. Everywoman, who heads West from mid-America to belatedly make it big in Hollywood. Or does she? Is Kowalski actually delusional? We’re never totally sure, but we do see her life retrospectively unfold in a series of cinematic takes. Wiest’s deadpan pixilation effortlessly negotiates this moving sidewalk of a narrative as well as its satirical swipes at today’s entertainment industry. Her supporting cast, along with the director Rachel Chavkin, are stellar. —Joel Lobenthal
