Sarah Lucas makes metaphors out of junk. Literally. Bananas are penises, melons are boobs, and a toilet or a pack of cigarettes can represent sexuality and manhood. “I think art should be amateur,” Lucas has said. “It should be done for love.” Nevertheless, her satirical tweaks of the art establishment have brought international acclaim, placing her alongside British contemporaries Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst. Lucas turned 60 last year. This exhibition examines an artist who has never played by the rules. —Elena Clavarino
