Exactly 100 years ago, Salvatore Ferragamo (1898–1960) unveiled his first store in Los Angeles, which was located across the street from Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre, on Hollywood Boulevard. It was a lucky coincidence. The Egyptian hosted all the movie premieres, and before long a costume director asked Ferragamo to design shoes that cast members of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments could wear to the premiere. His creations were the talk of the town and soon Ferragamo was known as the “Shoemaker to the Stars.” This exhibition in Florence tells the story of the Italian artisan’s life. —Elena Clavarino
