A classic conservative refrain after the rise of “woke” culture and #MeToo was that comedy was dead. With cancel culture looming and sexist or racist remarks increasingly risky, many insisted that nothing truly funny could be said publicly anymore. The complaint drove people nuts—especially funny leftists who still had things to say. Robby Hoffman is a case in point. A Jewish lesbian beloved by many, including young Democrats, she has a gift for ruffling feathers in an intelligent, hilarious, and yet non-offensive way. Her Netflix special, Wake Up, came out in December and hasn’t left Instagram reels since, reminding us of her best bits (like her well-known joke about the gayness of men watching sports together). She’s now coming to New York for one night only as part of a larger U.S. tour. —Jeanne Malle
