Following one French Jewish family through five generations, from 1944 to today, Joshua Harmon’s acclaimed play looks at a clan that continually questions, “Are we safe?” Prayer for the French Republic, which had its premiere in 2022, returns to themes explored in Harmon’s much-acclaimed 2012 debut, Bad Jews: Judaism in Europe versus Judaism in New York, and the impact of the Holocaust on a more recent generation of Jews. Directed by the Tony Award-winning David Cromer, the show’s turn on Broadway features several cast members from the off-Broadway run, including Betsy Aidem and Francis Benhamou. —Jensen Davis
