Pierre Soulages / Outrenoir

July 7 – Sept 10, 2020
G/F, 2 Ice House St, Central, Hong Kong

“The masked sun,” the French painter Pierre Soulages once said of a solar eclipse, “was the black of before the light, before colors, that which I love for its gravity, its radicalness. It was like the origin of the world, our origins too, before being born.” Outrenoir means “beyond black,” and refers to a technique developed by Soulages, for whom black is not a color but a medium through which he plays with perception. This virtual viewing room is dedicated to three paintings from his new series. Soulages, who turned 100 this year, has been called “the world’s greatest living artist.” This exhibition includes paintings from 2013 to 2020, works that test the limits of abstraction, creating depth and reflection out of darkness. —E.C.
