Throughout his career the late German photographer Peter Lindbergh worked with and against the tides of fashion, shooting spreads for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, Rolling Stone, and W, but insisting upon a personal, non-commercial approach. “For me every photograph, fashion pictures included, is a portrait of someone, and has to have some truth somewhere,” Lindbergh once said. “The clothes are simply a stage for expressing what I want.” A collection of Lindbergh’s photographs celebrates his singular vision. —J.V.
