“I am trying to create something that is questionable, something that is difficult, if not impossible, to put into words,” says the Scottish painter Peter Doig. He achieves that wordless magic, but how he does it is the question. A painter of landscapes and figures, Doig’s art balances precariously between image and atmosphere. His sense of color is incantatory. This is Doig’s first exhibition, long-awaited, in Japan. —E.C.
