The abstract painter and sculptor Per Kirkeby, who died in 2018, at 79, thought his profession brought “a certain loss of innocence.” When looking at a landscape, he said, what he first saw was “innocent, in a way,” then “the innocence of the first observation is replaced by structure.” Kirkeby was a geologist by trade and an artist at heart. His expeditions to Greenland and the Arctic reflected his interest in the way nature intersects with aesthetics. Born in Copenhagen, Kirkeby is now hailed as one of his country’s greats. This exhibition presents his lush landscape paintings. —Alexandra Lemer
