New York City Ballet: Shylight

DRIFT, Shylight, 2023.

Jan 17 – Feb 26, 2023
20 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023, USA

The word “nyctinasty” is not one most of us know, and used in the context of the New York City Ballet it seems to be missing the “b” in N.Y.C.B. Actually, it has to do with flowers, and is defined as “the circadian rhythmic nastic movements of higher plants in response to the onset of darkness.” Think of moonflowers. This year, for its 10th Art Series initiative, N.Y.C.B. has asked the Amsterdam-based art studio DRIFT to collaborate with the spaces in the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. DRIFT has responded with an installation called Shylight, flowerlike hanging lights that are nyctinastic, meaning they will respond to stimulus, not unlike romantic tutus flaring during a pirouette. The show is on through the entire Winter Season. —Laura Jacobs
