Nara, an ancient capital of Japan located in the southern part of the country, was once the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. To celebrate Japan’s hosting of both the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020, the British Museum is displaying 15 major Buddhist and Shinto sacred sculptures and ritual objects—from Nara—in two locations in the museum, free of charge. —J.V.
