Michel François was born in 1956 in Saint-Trond, a Flemish city east of Brussels. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre in the 1970s, and became absorbed by the concept of the “total artwork.” As he sees it, the gallery space should be an extension of the studio. François defies categorization, shifting between sculpture, installation, and photography. He plays with humble materials. In 1990, for his work Untitled (Bureau), François made a desk of crumpled paper. In this exhibition, he rethinks some of his iconic works of recent vintage for the space in Piazzetta Nilo. —Elena Clavarino
