Metropolitan Opera At-Home Gala

Apr 25–26, 2020
30 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023, USA

For the thrill of operatic performance in real time, the Met’s all-star At-Home Gala is just the ticket. Streaming live on Saturday, April 25, at one P.M. E.D.T. and available on demand through early evening on the 26th, this marathon of sprints showcases some 40 of the Met’s reigning crème de la crème serenading from the privacy of their homes, some as far from the Big Apple as Baton Rouge, Riga, Malta, Tbilisi, the Stockholm suburbs, and Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Singers predominate, as you’d expect, but let’s hear it, too, for David Chan, who as the Met Orchestra’s concertmaster (which is to say lead violinist) occupies a perch as demanding as any diva’s. The Met’s general manager Peter Gelb, who officiates from his apartment on the Upper West Side, is promising “a great artistic but low-tech operation.” So, break out the bubbly and sit back to be transported. Though Steve Jobs might have wondered what’s so low-tech about broadcasting from an iPhone. —M.G.
