“Every normal human being (and not merely the ‘artist’) has an inexhaustible store of buried images in his subconscious,” explained Max Ernst, “it is merely a matter of courage or liberating procedures … to bring pure and unadulterated found objects to light.” Ernst was a dreamer whose art encourages us to dream. The rich colors of his images match the intensity of their content. This painter, sculptor, poet, and theorist was born in Germany in 1891, and was a pioneer of Dada and Surrealism. The Hôtel de Caumont–Centre d’Art presents the arc of Ernst’s genius in an exhibition of 120 works. —Thalia Bonas
