The Canadian artist Matthew Wong had a short life. He committed suicide in 2019, at age 35, after many years of intractable depression. Feelings of deep isolation pervade his paintings, which are as visceral as they are beautiful. Saturated palettes shape nocturnal landscapes and still lifes. Wong’s explorations of the color blue, which took pathways through Chinese calligraphy, scroll painting, Pointillism, and Fauvism, are the subject of this exhibition. —E.C.
