“I’m part tree,” the Venezuelan artist Luchita Hurtado, who died on August 13, 2020, at the age of 99, has said, “and I’m part of anything that’s on this planet.” Fascinated with the interconnections between the earth, humanity, and the cosmos, Hurtado expressed her philosophy in her painting. Totemic figures, patterns, and abstract forms coexist in harmonious, warm colors. This exhibition presents over 30 works by Hurtado, dating from the 1960s to the present day and including both paintings and works on paper—many on view for the first time. —E.C.
