“The notion of fragmentation, especially of the body, is prevalent in our culture, and it’s reflected in my works,” says the collage artist Lorna Simpson. “We’re fragmented not only in terms of how society regulates our bodies but in the way we think about ourselves.” Simpson’s collages nod to Cubism and Surrealism, but use imagery from African-American visual culture. In this exhibition, a selection of her recent multimedia works are on view. The monumental paintings of ice—cold, white, dangerous—are particularly powerful. —Elena Clavarino
