Oliver!, the musical based on Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist, premiered in southwest London in 1960, moved to the West End that same year, arrived on Broadway in 1963, and hit the big screen in 1968. For those of us who were around then and keen on theater, the songs are in us forever, every last word. And what songs—rousing, clever, yearning, soaring—one winner after another and all from one man, Lionel Bart, the British son of a Jewish tailor from Galicia. Oliver! isn’t revived often enough, but here it is at Encores!, starring Lilli Cooper as Nancy, Raúl Esparza as Fagan, Tam Mutu as Sikes, Brad Oscar as Mr. Bumble, and Benjamin Pajak as Oliver. Please Sir, we want some more. —Laura Jacobs
