One might assume that a novel published on September 11, 2001, would be overshadowed by the terrorist attacks in New York City and go unnoticed. Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, however, sold 15-million copies and won the Man Booker Prize for 2002. The story of a 16-year-old shipwreck survivor and his four animal companions has been adapted for both the screen and the stage. The 2012 movie won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture. The 2022 hit London production, in which the animals are embodied by puppets, won five Olivier Awards. It’s now on Broadway, directed by Max Webster. —Jensen Davis
