Lessons in Chemistry

Brie Larson in Lessons in Chemistry.

After dominating the book club circuit following its release in 2022, Bonnie Garmus’s debut novel Lessons in Chemistry arrives on the small screen in an eight-part adaptation for Apple TV. The show stars Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a sharp-witted scientist chafing under the misogynist culture of the laboratory where she works. Amid the daily indignities she faces, Elizabeth meets and falls in love with Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), the institute’s chemistry wunderkind. A tragic series of events leads to Elizabeth’s dismissal from the institute. While she’s picking up the pieces of her life, another unexpected turn lands her the job of a TV cooking show host—a role she swiftly spins into something smarter. Produced by Larson, Susannah Grant, and Lee Eisenberg, the show is at once a defiant feminist declaration and a surprisingly tender love story. —Paulina Prosnitz
