“The show is a mess,” says Kate Berlant at the beginning of her critically acclaimed one-woman show Kate. “It’s about me, so of course it is.” The performance—fiction presented as autobiography—loosely tracks Berlant’s desperate attempt to break into show business. The main thing stopping her? An inability to cry on command. Originally staged Off Broadway in 2022, and directed by Bo Burnham, Berlant’s exploration of narcissism’s upper limits is full of hammy asides and winks at the audience. The show turned Berlant, a working comedian and actress since 2014, into a household name. Reviewing Kate, both The New York Times and The Guardian described Berlant as a “grande dame” of comedy. She now brings Kate to London. Secure your tickets quickly. —Jensen Davis
