“Through repairing, we leave behind the animal realm … We can repair weakness. All kinds of weakness: aesthetic, physical, and intellectual.” Kader Attia, a French artist with roots in Algeria, invokes both countries and their traumas in his art of “repair.” Creating jarring installations on a massive scale, he uses industrial materials that comment on cultural identity and the consequences of migration. The artist makes it clear that even after repair, we are still left with scars. —E.C.
