In 1957, when New York was on the verge of a cultural revolution, young Jerry Schatzberg was setting up his photography studio at 333 Park Avenue South. Schatzberg had worked under the fashion photographer William Helburn, and he brought wit, curiousity, and a love of glamour to his solo venture. The studio at 333 soon became a veritable salon, host to leading personalities of the 60s: Warhol, Hendrix, the Beatles, the Stones, Aretha Franklin, you get the picture. Before long, Bronx-born Schatzberg was himself a star. He went on to direct films, among them The Panic in Needle Park (1971) and The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979). The exhibition at Fotografiska offers a look at Schatzberg’s photographs in the neighborhood where they were taken. —E.C.
