The Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, born in Barcelona, works on a monumental scale. His contributions for public spaces have been featured at the Shard in London and Hudson Yards in New York. While stately and vast, his work focuses on the human condition, looking at both individuals and groups, and it does so in hard materials such as stone, steel, and glass, but also using video, language, and sound. This show in Grand Rapids, the first U.S. retrospective of Plensa’s work, features pieces from the last 40 years along with his immersive marble installation Utopia, erected here in 2021. —Maggie Turner
