“The two things that I remember people saying to me as early as three or four years old are ‘you ask too many questions’ and ‘you’re not supposed to stare at people.’ Most of my work is some combination of the two.” Hank Willis Thomas was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1976. His father was a jazz musician and his mother was an artist and educator. Thomas’s art has been shown at renowned venues around the world. “I Am Many” is his eighth exhibition with Jack Shainman Gallery. It delves into the similarities between past and present, and includes textile, retroreflective, and lenticular works along with sculptures and mixed media. —Henry McGrath
