Bud and Doug, two earnest theater nerds who know almost nothing about Johannes Gutenberg, the German blacksmith who brought letterpress printing to Europe, have decided to make him the subject of a musical that will launch their Broadway careers. In their version of history, Gutenberg is a winemaker who invents his press in one night and then battles an evil, Satan-worshiping monk intent on spreading inaccurate readings of the Bible. Naturally, Act One ends with a kickline. Gutenberg! The Musical!, written by Scott Brown and Anthony King—the duo that wrote Beetlejuice, the musical—began as an informal production at the Upright Citizens Brigade, then went Off Broadway in 2006. Now, the show heads to Broadway with a cast led by Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, the original stars of The Book of Mormon. —Jensen Davis
