Time and time again we read that an aesthetic turning point comes not with highfalutin theory but with the discovery of indigenous crafts. With that in mind, Istanbul Modern’s International Artist Residency Program invited ten artists from around the world to collaborate with Turkish master craftspeople, and the results are on view in this exhibition. Rodrigo Hernández takes on paper marbling, Outi Pieski assays block printing, and Sevet Koçyiğit studies embroidery and quilting. Tricks of the trade—and folk wisdom, too—meet the contemporary hand and eye. A fascinating experiment. —E.C.
