Emily Nelligan: Cranberry Island

Emily Nelligan, 30 OCT 99 (2), 1999.

July 2 – Aug 16, 2026
162 Russell Avenue, Rockport, Maine

Maine’s Cranberry Island, only two miles long, is home to 40 full-time residents. The dreamy stillness of the area is palpable in the works of the American artist Emily Nelligan (1924–2018). Frequenting the island since the early days of her long career, Nelligan’s landscape drawings in charcoal evoke the ethereal nature of her beloved coastal Maine. Although grayscale in composition, the shadowy depth of Nelligan’s work draws the viewer into a deep quiet that is strangely emotional. Also on view is a selection of works by gallery artists. —Lucy Horowitz
