Elton John

Maybe the gogo boots and glitter aren’t for you. But aesthetics aside, there is surely at least one Elton John song that you love—or love in spite of yourself. Think of that scene in the movie Almost Famous: the mediocre 70s rock band on the tour bus, mad at each other until “Tiny Dancer” comes on the radio and they begin to sing. The song works like a secular hymn, so embedded in pop culture that it’s comforting and connective to hear it. Today Elton John is part of a common lexicon, and perhaps some communion around his hits could do us all good. He streams live tonight. —C.J.F.
