Dublin Dance Festival 2024: Dance Out Loud

May 14–25, 2024

For its 2024 iteration, dubbed Dance Out Loud, the annual Dublin Dance Festival is organizing itself around the unlikely pair of the urban and the folk, whether Taiwanese, Portuguese, or some specific hyphenate like L.A. krumping adapted to Lyon, France, or hazy dance club anarchy, Irish style. The curation is judicious, with neither too many festival-circuit regulars nor too little Irish representation. (Absence of local talent at these international affairs is a giveaway to stay away.) Plus, Dublin Dance Festival 2024 takes risks on those not yet certifiably risen but clearly on the rise (Botis Seva, Mufutau Yusuf). Beyond its specific contours, though, this festival, like so many others, offers the chance to feast on dance—onstage, on film, outdoors—day after day for nearly two weeks. By the end, you are no longer preoccupied by what you love and hate—your taste—but by how these dances describe the moment we are living through. —Apollinaire Scherr
