Double Exposure: Sylvia Rafael

Mar 22 – June 30, 2023
Chaim Levanon St 8, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel

Sylvia Raphael (1937–2005) had a humble upbringing near Cape Town in South Africa. Having witnessed a tragic anti-Semitic incident, however, she moved to a kibbutz in Israel in 1963. A job as a teacher in Tel Aviv led to her recruitment by Mossad, the national intelligence agency of Israel. Raphael achieved the highest possible rank for an agent (“combatant”), and helped track down the Black September operatives who committed the Munich massacre. She was also part of the Lillehammer affair—the Mossad’s mistaken murder of Ahmed Bouchikhi, a Moroccan waiter. During her time in the field, between 1964 and 1974, Raphael posed as a press photographer and just happened to be gifted with a camera. Her poignant and powerful photographs make up this exhibition. —Elena Clavarino
