Dialogues des Carmélites, by Francis Poulenc

May 21 – July 19, 2020
New Rd, Lewes BN8 5UU, UK

Crises of faith in the shadow of the guillotine, which rasps through the concluding “Salve Regina” with soul-shaking unpredictability. Danielle de Niese is Blanche de la Force, the panicky aristocrat who seeks refuge in the convent. Katarina Dalayman portrays Madame de Croissy, the old prioress whose harsh, granitic façade crumbles in the face of death. Golda Schulz appears as the new prioress Madame Lidoine, luminous in her spiritual devotion but with no cards to play. That’s a threesome to conjure with. The director Barrie Kosky brings to the party a sixth sense for mob mentality and private anguish. The intuitive, meticulous Robin Ticciati conducts. —M.G.
