The fantastical demons of the Renaissance. The sinister landscapes of Romanticism. The creeping malevolence of 20th-century horror. Macabre images and visions of death have always been central to artistic output, especially in the fields of fashion, music, film, and visual art. This exhibition, which doesn’t shy from the word “gruesome,” begins by exploring horror tropes in history, and then brings together relevant artworks from the last two decades. The artists are diverse—among them Rei Kawakubo, Billie Eilish, Lars von Trier, Berlinde de Bruyckere, and the Chapman Brothers. —Elena Clavarino
