“Oh thank God,” proclaimed Mike Hale in The New York Times. “Someone finally gave Zahn McClarnon his own television show.” Hale was reviewing Dark Winds, which had just released its first season. McClarnon, who had yet to prove himself in a leading role, starred as the Navajo detective Joe Leaphorn and quickly demonstrated an aptitude for playing a deliberate, shrewd, and potentially dangerous character, a capability hinted at in his Fargo and Westworld roles. Season One of Dark Winds received much praise, as did McClarnon’s performance. Continuing to draw its source material from Tony Hillerman’s detective saga Leaphorn & Chee, the second installment of the series will unravel over the summer. —Jack Sullivan
